Motorcycle Riding in Winter

The arrival of cold weather doesn't mean you can't enjoy the thrill of the open air and open road on your motorcycle. If you like to enjoy your bike all season long, here are some tips to help you do so during the winter months.

Seasonal tires. Whatever tire you use during the summer months, be sure to use standard street tires during cold months. These tires develop a grip at lower temperatures and attain effective operating temperatures more quickly.

Check your oil. Some manufacturers recommend one weight of oil all year long. Check your owner’s manual – if recommended, thinner oil can improve your bike’s start-up and performance during prolonged cold periods.

Dress in layers. Just as you would for any cold weather outdoor activity, dress in layers. Layers keep you insulated and warm. Start with a light base layer – choose a microfiber that’s breathable, since this layer will trap warm air next to your skin and wick away sweat. The top layer should be a tough, windproof material, such as leather or nylon. Take care that layering your clothing doesn’t restrict the movement you need to ride safely.

Review your insurance. Check your insurance policy and make sure it allows for year-round riding. Generally, a discount for limited use off-season is already reflected in your annual premiums. However, if your policy requires your bike be laid up during certain months, you may not be as protected as you think.
